The Hebrew University 2020/21 – At a Glance

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) is Israel’s leading academic and research institution, serving students from some 80 countries on 6 campuses. Founded in 1918 by luminaries including Albert Einstein, Chaim Weizmann, Sigmund Freud and Martin Buber, HU is ranked in the top 10% of the world’s leading universities. To date, HU faculty and alumni have won 8 Nobel Prizes, 1 Fields Medal and 1 Abel Prize – a proud tradition of innovation and excellence.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked first in Israel and 88th globally in Reuters Top 100 of the World’s Most Innovative Universities.

This upcoming year, over 25,000 students will be studying at the Hebrew University. According to our data, ~78% of them hail from outside Jerusalem, highlighting the University’s role as an engine of economic growth for the capital city. Most out-of-town students hail from Tel Aviv.

Hebrew University students prefer to return to HU for a master’s degree: 40% of our entering master students earned their bachelor’s degree at the Hebrew University.

The highest psychometric score by undergraduate applicants: 790, held by four applicants: Two to medicine, one to Amirim for excelling students (computer science & cognitive science), one for Amirim for excelling students (psychology).

An increase in the number of students along the autism spectrum: New data from the Dean of Students office shows a significant increase this year in the number of undergraduate students on the autism spectrum or who requested help from the Dean’s office. Last year ten students on the spectrum were enrolled; this year 30 such students will receive assistance from the Dean’s office, and 7 additional students are on the waitlist. In addition, the requests for academic help for students with autism come from across campuses and fields. Most students are enrolled in the Faculty of Humanities and Computer Science, while one is enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and one in the Faculty of Agriculture.

There are more female students, and more of them are electing to study science and computer science. What follows is a break-down by degree:
